Bagchi group The group pursues fundamental theoretical studies in different areas of physical chemistry/chemical physics. Because of the academic freedom we enjoy at the Indian Institute of Science in pursuing our research goal, we have almost always explored problems from very basic point and often studied unusual problems.

Post-doc position available. We seek a post-doctoral fellow for working on various problems on physical and biophysical chemistry.

Our previous important works ...

  • theoretical studies on the solvent effects on electron transfer reactions,
  • development of microscopic theories of solvation dynamics and orientational relaxation in polar and non-polar solvents,
  • microscopic theories of ionic conductivity in electrolyte solution,
  • development of a phenomenological theory of dynamics of water at surfaces of biological interest (we coined the term "biological water" which has later been used by many),
  • theorietical investigation of protein folding by using simple minimalistic models which we developed ourselves,
  • relaxation in model supercooled liquids and non-ideal composition dependence in binary mixtures,
  • study of the effects of molecular asymmetry in giving rise to macroscopic chirality,
  • anomalous vibrational phase relaxation of nitrogen near its gas-liquid critical point, among others.

More recently we have studied ...

  • dynamics of liquid crystals and explored the analogy between supercooled liquids and liquid crystals near isotropic-nematic phase transition from an energy landscape perspective,
  • the free energy surface for gas-liquid nucleation in deeply supercooled regime (near its spinodal decomposition),
  • both thermodynamic and dynamic properties of water in the major and minor grooves of DNA,
  • anomalous composition dependence of vibrational relaxation in binary mixtures,
  • Development of a new orientation dependent potential of mean force between amino acid residues by using the information from protein data bank,
  • Forster energy transfer between donor-acceptor systems where
    1. both are dye molecules,
    2. one dye and another nano metal particle,
    3. both nano metal particles
  • molecular theory of intercalation of a drug into the DNA.
Many of the papers published from our group over the last two decades have/had a wide impact both in India and abroad. While papers have been cited more than 12000 times, H-index stands at 59.
